Undermining…

first_img…the judiciaryBack in the days – those days when Burnham was launching his dictatorship after being placed at the head of Independent Guyana — the man who’d be King of Guyana decided he wasn’t going to risk having a man of the legal stature of Sir Joseph Luckhoo as Chief Justice. But what was he to do?? One of Burnham’s trademarks was to genuflect to the legal forms — and very rarely, the spirit — to get his way.He couldn’t DISMISS Luckhoo, so he created a NEW position of “Chancellor of the Judiciary”, who’d be superior to the Chief Justice. He then inveigled Kenneth Stoby, a Guyanese Jurist who was then Chief Justice of Barbados, to become Chancellor by matching the Bajan’s salary scale, which was even higher than Burnham’s!! In case you’re wondering, Luckhoo promptly quit and moved to Jamaica. So what if this was an unnecessary drain on our Treasury?? Burnham got what he wanted, didn’t he?To be honest, we then attracted a string of high-powered – albeit expensive – Chancellors. But fast forward to 1989, when Desmond Hoyte decided he wanted to have a high-powered ATTORNEY GENERAL — which position, we should emphasise, isn’t a JUDICIAL one, but a POLITICAL appointee who’s the consigliere of the EXECUTIVE! And guess what Hoyte did — this man who is touted as a moral exemplar of good governance by some? He invited his Chancellor, Keith Massiah, to become his hired gun Attorney General!!Ahhh…how our Judiciary’s reputation fell in the eyes of the Caribbean legal fraternity, especially when Massiah demanded, and got to keep, his massive Chancellor’s salary as Attorney General.By that time, the Judiciary was about all Guyana could boast about. But at least we were starting a tradition that our Attorneys General had to be members of the bar with standing. The pay certainly was an inducement!!Fast forward to the present, and we have the sorry figure of Basil Williams as Attorney General for the last two years, making a mockery of his position. His only evident “qualification” for the job being that of Chairman of the PNC, Pressie decided to award him silk to buttress his position. But, like President Obama said, if you put lipstick on a porcine creature, it doesn’t change anything, does it? What to do??Well, the Government just hired FIVE retired Judges. With an average age of 80, these are real “old heads”, and they are there to advise Williams. With the money Government now has to shell out, wouldn’t it have been better to just fire Williams? And what about the impact of FIVE judges becoming legal guns-for-hire?But then, Williams is Chairman of the PNC, isn’t he??!!…Indigenous PeoplesThe toshaos are elected by each Indigenous Peoples’ village to represent their interests. Yet, after the Government unilaterally connected the issue of their land rights to that of African ancestral land rights under one Commission of Inquiry, they’re asked to APOLOGISE for commenting!!Obviously, they can comment to support initiatives of the Government. But how dare they disagree?? And in case you forgot what’s it’s all about, on the same day of the Government’s demand comes Eric Philips to “explain” why Indigenous peoples are getting “too much land”!! Yup! There were “only” about 6000 Indigenous Peoples when the Dutch came here. So how could they occupy ¼ of Guyana? So, reasons Phillips, if a person owns a house with 10 rooms, he’s entitled to own only one room, since he couldn’t have occupied all of them!! But Philips can’t have it both ways. He’s depending on European laws to claim land ownership for African Guyanese. But it’s an European (British) codicil to the Independence Agreement that gave Indigenous peoples their land rights!! Checkmate!!…the Judicial and other Service CommissionsYour Eyewitness should’ve known: Patrick Yarde, rigs the GPSU’s elections; and before the results are officially in, he’s sworn in by Pressie as acting Chair of the Public Service Commission!!Reward for following PNC’s traditions!!last_img read more

Israel ‘to Encourage Energy, Mining Investments’ in Liberia

first_imgIsraeli Ambassador accredited to Liberia, Ami Mehl, has said that he is doing everything possible to lure Israeli investors to Liberia, especially in the energy and mining sectors. Speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia when he paid a courtesy call on President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Tuesday, Ambassador Ami Mehl expressed his preparedness to work with Liberia to ensure a boost in energy for the country. This, he said, is extremely crucial to meeting the middle-income level that the Liberian government envisages, for which it has crafted the Vision 2030 development agenda.“Madam President, we intend to encourage investment in the energy and mining sectors. This we think will help the government in its development agenda that would ensure that the country becomes a middle income country,” the Ambassador said. The Israeli diplomat also informed President Sirleaf that two of his country’s experts in Early Childhood Learning are due in the country soon to work with the Ministry of Education to examine existing issues and advance proposals for practical and workable outcomes. Ambassador Mehl, who is resident in Accra, Ghana, was accompanied to the President’s office by Foreign Affairs Minister Marjon Kamara.President Sirleaf lauded the ambassador for his continued interest and support in attracting potential business for Liberia, saying that an Israeli private sector intervention in Liberia’s energy sector remains crucial to expand the nation’s overall energy capacity, even after the completion of the Mount Coffee Hydro Plant.President Sirleaf noted that Liberia is part of the U.S. government funded “Power Africa” initiative; and working in partnership with Israeli investors is a welcomed development. She also said Liberia’s new agenda for doing business is anchored on value addition, especially in the forestry, fisheries, oil palm, coffee, cocoa and mining sectors. She noted that the much needed jobs will come when value chain addition becomes part of the country’s economic diversification vision. Present at the courtesy call was Amir Hayman, a high ranking official of Sociedade de Investimentos Mineiros (SOCIM), a South African company, expressing interest in forming a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement that will not only ensure local ownership, but also enhance the economic competitiveness of the country’s local content.SOCIM’s area of focus is polished diamonds, and Mr. Hayman says he will return in a month to conduct further studies on the sector. The company has subsidiaries in Angola, Botswana, Russia, Canada, the Democratic Republic of Congo, etc. Mr. Hayman spoke of the Diamond Academy in Israel, which he said when the PPP deal is sealed, would provide training for Liberians once significant progress is made, coupled with the sealing of a deal to kick start the proposal. He said, the Liberians – once trained and specialized – will be critical in any unfolding Public-Private Partnership. He indicated that SOCIM-South Africa’s long term goal will be to set up a viable polished diamond partnership based on the best standards, characterized by sustainable relations on a win-win business model. Meanwhile the delegation is holding discussions with other key stakeholders in the energy, agriculture, fisheries and mining sectors.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Wolf is officially out for the year

first_img“Obviously, I took a huge risk to come here,” Wolf said. “I knew it was a risk, but I took a gamble, and I lost. Life is full of them.” The Dodgers hold a $9 million option on Wolf for next season that they clearly aren’t going to exercise, which will leave him in the unenviable position of being a free agent after a season in which injury prevented him from pitching after the All-Star break. But Wolf also is a veteran lefty with a proven track record, so there is a strong chance some team – perhaps even the Dodgers – will take a chance on him at a much lower price. “I really have no idea,” Wolf said. “I’m in uncharted waters.” Wolf had reconstructive elbow surgery two seasons ago, but proved he was healthy last summer when he came back and pitched well in 12 starts for Philadelphia. But before he had that surgery, he had undergone an MRI exam that failed to show the need for it, so for a while he tried to pitch through his elbow discomfort. Wolf speculated that his current shoulder injury might be the result of a mechanical change he made to accommodate the elbow pain before it was discovered that he would need Tommy John surgery. If Drs. Lewis Yocum and Neal ElAttrache find the cause of Wolf’s discomfort, they will repair it immediately. But no prognosis for Wolf’s return to the mound will be known until after the surgery. By Tony Jackson STAFF WRITER SAN DIEGO – Dodgers pitcher Randy Wolf’s last-ditch effort to return from the disabled list before the end of the season has been snuffed out by another setback. The left-hander felt more discomfort in his shoulder this week and will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Wednesday at the Kerlan-Jobe clinic to determine the cause. The development casts Wolf’s future into doubt, especially given that he spurned a handful of multi-year offers last winter to accept a one-year contract with his hometown Dodgers. “If it’s only an impingement, which we think it is, he’ll be down six to eight weeks,” Dodgers trainer Stan Conte said. Wolf was less optimistic. “If they find nothing, I’ll be surprised,” he said. “It’s just too weird. I haven’t thrown (off a mound) in four weeks, and it still isn’t right. Usually you feel better after four weeks of not throwing.” Getting close Dodgers manager Grady Little said that although Nomar Garciaparra (strained left calf) still hasn’t felt good enough to try running, he has looked good enough in batting practice that he might be activated for pinch-hitting purposes as soon as today, when active rosters can be expanded to as many as 40 players. “He really looks good swinging the bat and fielding ground balls, too,” Little said. “But he still feels a little something in there (running), and we don’t want to push it until he feels comfortable.” Covering the bases Newly acquired right-hander Esteban Loaiza will make his Dodgers debut on Monday at Chicago, with Brad Penny starting on Tuesday night against the Cubs and the rest of the rotation staying in order thereafter. … Lefty Eric Stults was optioned to triple-A Las Vegas to clear a roster spot for Loaiza, but Stults is expected to return to the majors after the 51s’ season concludes on Monday … The Dodgers are expected to promote some players from Las Vegas today and some more on Monday. If double-A Jacksonville reaches the Southern League playoffs, none of the Suns’ players will be promoted until their season ends. tony.jackson@dailynews.com160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. CONFIRMED: Man City’s UCL clash with Monchengladbach moved to Wednesday

first_img Tuesday’s match was postponed as heavy rain saturated the Etihad pitch 1 Manchester City’s Champions League Group C opener against Borussia Monchengladbach has been rearranged for Wednesday evening following a torrential thunderstorm on Tuesday.Heavy rain saturated the pitch at the Etihad Stadium in the two hours before the scheduled 7.45pm kick-off and made the surrounding areas dangerous.A decision to call off the game was eventually taken at around 7.25pm based on safety concerns around the ground. The German club later confirmed a rearranged time of 7.45pm Wednesday.According to UEFA competition regulations – article 26.03 – a decision on a rearranged date should have been announced within two hours of the postponement, with the following day the clear preference. However, discussions between the clubs and organisers proved complex. It is understood Gladbach expressed a preference for a 6pm kick-off due to travel concerns, but City were unable to guarantee adequate staffing levels at that time.Details of the rearranged fixture were eventually announced at 10.05pm, 45 minutes later than stipulated.Gladbach were the first to confirm with, moments later, UEFA tweeting: “The #UCL Group C fixture between @ManCity & @borussia_en will be played on Wednesday night at the same time (19.45 local time).”It is understood City made Gladbach an offer of accommodation at their £200million academy adjacent to the stadium, while it was confirmed all tickets would still be valid for Wednesday.Gladbach admitted they were not happy with the final decision.Club spokesman Markus Aretz said: “We asked UEFA and Manchester City play at 6pm because for sporting reasons we wanted to fly back to Germany.“That was important for us, but City could not make that possible. I don’t know the reasons why, they said we had to play at 7.45 like today. So UEFA had to make the decision to play at 7.45. We are not happy with that, but we have to take it like it is.“City offered us to spend the next night in the academy. That was no help because a hotel was not a problem.“I think it is always a disadvantage when you have to stay one day longer than planned. I think for the away team it is a disadvantage, without fans.”last_img read more

Was there a rush to judgment?

first_imgThen there was another case in which the family was suspected, until a handyman was considered as good as guilty. But in the end, it was an intruder who had abducted the child. Elizabeth Smart turned up alive and reasonably well over a year after her disappearance. It was the happiest news anyone could remember. Now John Mark Karr is jarring our foundation making us rethink all we “know” to be true. Even making us wonder about whether O.J. Simpson killed Nicole and Ron Goldman.Karr is also bursting another myth. Usually, the monsters among us look ordinary, but Karr is nothing short of creepy. If it’s possible to look like a pedophile, this guy does. He is a pasty, effeminate little man with haunting eyes. My mother said he looks “unfinished.” I think I know what she means. But before we all hop on the Karr did it bandwagon, let’s remind ourselves of John Ramsey’s own words: “Do not jump to conclusions, do not rush to judgment, do not speculate. Let the justice system take its course.”Phil Perrier is a comedian and writer in Los Angeles. Some involve doughnuts.Better yet, Patsy Ramsey, herself a former beauty contestant, dressed her little girl up in provocative outfits, with wigs and makeup; she exploited and sexualized her child. In most of our minds, this was all we needed to know. They did things we did not like to their child; therefore, they must be guilty. Much like Congressman Gary Condit was accepted as the killer of Washington intern Chandra Levy, because he admitted having an affair with her. It simply had to be. The only problem, Condit did not do it. Levy’s body was eventually found in a park near her home where she had gone jogging. As it turned out, Levy was the second female jogger killed in that park by a suspected serial killer. Levy’s killing was utterly random and senseless; it was not coherent, it did not add up.Meanwhile, all along, the Ramseys say they suspected an intruder had entered their home on Christmas Eve 1996 and killed their daughter. The very idea sounded absurd, even pathetic. What about the note? What about the broken paint brush which came from inside the house that was used as a garrote to strangle the little girl? Intruder? Please! EVERY once in a while, something comes along that forces all of us to re-boot our concept of what is real. John Mark Karr’s confession of guilt in the JonBen?t Ramsey murder is just such an event. For nearly 10 years, all major media outlets told us that someone in the Ramsey family killed JonBen?t. We were told that Patsy Ramsey had similar handwriting to that found on the infamous ransom note. We were told that the amount requested in the ransom note, $118,000, was the exact amount of John Ramsey’s Christmas bonus that year. Esteemed journalists wrote brilliant, compelling articles telling us why they believed that John or Patsy or even their 10-year-old son Burke had killed the little beauty queen. Patsy killed JonBen?t in a rage because the child had wet her bed. John killed his daughter because he was a sick pedophile. Burke killed his sister out of jealousy because she got all the attention. And we bought it. All of it. We wanted to believe they were guilty. After all, the Ramseys were rich. How many of us can relate to a man who gets a $118,000 Christmas bonus? Words used to describe the couple were “arrogant,” “elitist,” “smug.” last_img read more

DISSIDENT DEATH SQUADS TARGETING DONEGAL DRUG DEALERS

first_imgA DISSIDENT death squad which has murdered a number of drug dealers in Derry is planning to step up its campaign in Donegal and is now targeting dealers on this side of the Border, donegaldaily.com has learned.Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD) believes dealers are using the ‘safety’ of Donegal to peddle narcotics. And we have been told they are stalking a number of dealers in Inishowen, a number of areas of east Donegal and Letterkenny. The group was set up in Derry in late 2008 and consists of former republican paramilitaries who don’t believe police are doing enough to tackle drugs dealers. It actually supports the peace process.A security source in the North told us today: “We have information which we believe to be correct that a number of dealers who are based in County Donegal and who are dealing both in that county and here in Derry are being targeted by RAAD.“The group has carried out a number of attacks in Donegal and we believe there will be more.” In June 2009 the gang exploded a bomb under a car in Manorcunningham and in March last year it put a bomb inside a so-called ‘Head Shop’ in Letterkenny. The store never re-opened.And last Monday it claimed responsibility for an attempted ‘execution’ in Muff. A motorcyle used in the incident was later found burned out at Carnamoyle. Our source added: “These people have no qualms about carrying out attacks wherever and whenever suits them.“Obviously the PSNI and Gardai are working closely to monitor this threat.”DISSIDENT DEATH SQUADS TARGETING DONEGAL DRUG DEALERS was last modified: March 12th, 2011 by gregShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more
